Vegetable-tanned excellence, handmade at Himeji

PLOTTER’s original Horse Hair II leather is made from carefully selected thick steer hides from North America and finished in Himeji, the home of leather production. The leather is tanned with full vegetable tannin, which creates a robust and fine material fit for high-quality leather goods. After dyeing, each piece of leather is carefully scratched by hand by craftsmen to bring out the raised surface and unique texture of the leather, reminiscent of horsehair. The manual process results in sophisticated leather that is truly handmade.

A unique aging characteristic

Unlike uniform embossing, each horsehair mark shows a different expression, and the texture is reminiscent of the scratch process of the popular “Pueblo” series. If you look closely at the leather, it has a velvety texture. The raised portion shines while the valleys have a matte look. During the tanning process, oil is incorporated into the leather, resulting in a piece of leather with dynamic aging possibilities. The more you use it, natural hand oil will blend and smooth into the raised patterns on the horsehair texture, resulting in an elegant luster and natural color irregularities.

Revival of Horse Hair series

When the PLOTTER brand first launched in 2017, the original “Horse Hair” leather was one of the three series presented in PLOTTER’s leather lineup. Flash forward to November 2023, the second generation of the well-loved series, “Horse Hair II,” made its debut in Tokyo, Japan. Instead of the original embossing method, craftsmen carefully scratched and raised the delicate horse-hair-inspired pattern on each piece of leather by hand. This meticulous and time-consuming process yields a unique expression that makes each piece of leather one-of-a-kind. The original brass back plate is matte black, reminiscent of the first Horse Hair series.

The charm of leather products

Leather is a natural material from animals, which has individual differences and characteristics that cannot be found in man-made products. The expression of leather is not uniform due to blood vessels, small scratches, linear wrinkles, or uneven color bands while undergoing processing. This is not a defective product, but a sign of real leather. PLOTTER retains the individual differences of leather to show the charm of leather.

Maintenance and Care

No special maintenance is required. To remove dust from the surface, a simple light brushing with a leather brush or wiping with a soft cloth is sufficient. Please note, the use of leather cream may cause stains, discoloration, and sudden changes in the texture of “Horse Hair II”. Since the character of leather contains enough oil content, there is no need to apply leather cream.
