Liscio Leather and Maintenance

What is Liscio?

In Italian, the word “Liscio” means “smooth”, and you can immediately see and feel the smooth surface texture when you hold a Liscio Ring Leather Binder in your hands. Your palm can easily glide over the surface, calling parallel to the smoothness of PLOTTER original refill paper inside. Admire the pristine quality, but don’t be afraid to let it grow with you through time. The high-quality leather material is ready to take on the scuffs and marks from daily use, further enriching the personality of each Ring Leather Binder.

“Liscio” is an authentic smooth leather that faithfully reproduces the traditional Italian “Vachetta” process, a process passed down for over 1000 years and almost discontinued, that results in an oil-smoothed surface that will age beautifully over time. The process is done at the famous Italian tannery “Bardalassi Carlo”, using only the cow shoulder leather (one of the rarest leather parts), the material is strained and repeatedly infused in barrels of cow leg oil, so the leather material retains a significant moist luster. The oil infusion also allows the leather binder to retain that unique scent which is slow to dissipate even after a long period of use.

Your one-of-a-kind leather stories

What’s special about PLOTTER leather products is that the individual difference of leather is embraced and presented authentically through each one-of-a-kind Ring Leather Binder. Although Liscio leather is picked from the rarest part of the entire cow leather, they still harbor some irregularities from piece to piece—not cookie cutter to have the same exterior or consistent look. Especially when you flip open a Liscio Ring Leather Binder, you might notice some interesting color bands and texture differences on the inside.

This is the result of craftsmen meticulously going over each piece of leather and shaving the underside, so the entire piece maintains the right thickness. Consider it the mark of manual expertise and not one Ring Leather Binder has the same interior look! What is your Liscio Ring Leather Binder’s unique mark?

The charm of leather aging

At first, Liscio leather feels firm and stiff when new. However, through daily handling, the characteristic of oil-smoothed leather allows it to become supple and moist to your touch and use. Not only does the leather exterior patina become glossy, but the color will also become deeper. Aside from using the Ring Leather Binder as a reliable vehicle for your daily work, it will also transform beautifully along with your growth and progress.

How to care for your Liscio Ring Leather Binder?

The best way to take care of Liscio leather is by handling it daily as the leather will continue to take in your body oil from your fingers and the environment. You can maintain it simply by dry wiping the dust off the surface of the leather using a soft cloth, or brush lightly with a leather brush made of horse or pig hair.

As with all genuine leather, moisture such as rain or liquids other than water (coffee, tea, etc.) may cause stains. Humidity and sweat may also cause the leather to evolve differently, and keep in mind that on lighter-colored products stains are relatively easily visible. Color transfer and discoloration are inevitable with leather, especially when it is wet or sustains abrasion, so please handle it with care when carrying it in a light-colored bag.

If the Ring Leather Binder had been stored away for a long time and you feel like the texture is getting dry, we recommend applying a small amount of leather cream and gently buff it into the surface. Try it in an inconspicuous place first before applying it to the whole surface. Do note that too much application may result in stains, discolorations, or sudden changes in texture.

General tips and precautions for leather storage and maintenance

  • When storing, make sure that no sweat, moisture, or dirt remains.
  • Store in a well-ventilated place away from high temperature and humidity and direct sunlight.
Also, take it out from time to time and dry it in the shade. If stored without use for a long time, there is a risk of mold and discoloration due to humidity and temperature.
  • Please note that if left in a place exposed to ultraviolet rays for a long period, it may fade or discolor. (The same applies to long-term storage on a bookshelf or desk.)
  • Avoid contact with other chemical materials such as leather products and vinyl products as it may cause color transfer or discoloration.
  • Avoid using thinner, benzine, or alcohol as it may harden or discolor. Also, please note that even if it is not these undiluted solutions, the use of products containing ingredients may cause discoloration or hardening. Examples of familiar products that contain alcohol are wet tissues, alcohol disinfectant wipes, or antiperspirant sheets, etc.
